One of the first questions patients ask before committing to a crown is a practical one: how long do dental crowns last? The honest, evidence-based answer is that a well-made crown on a properly prepared tooth typically serves for 10 to 15 years, and many last considerably longer. Survival depends on the material, the quality of the fit, the health of the tooth underneath and how well you care for it. As a prosthodontist, I have seen thirty-year-old crowns still performing beautifully — and five-year-old crowns that failed because of decay at the margin. This guide explains what the research actually shows, which warning signs matter and when replacement becomes the sensible choice.
How Long Do Dental Crowns Last? What the Evidence Shows
Crown longevity is one of the best-studied questions in restorative dentistry, so we do not need to rely on guesswork. A landmark systematic review by Sailer and colleagues, published in Dental Materials in 2015, pooled survival data for single crowns and reported five-year survival rates of around 94 to 96 per cent for metal-ceramic, densely sintered zirconia and reinforced glass-ceramic crowns. In other words, in most cases fewer than one crown in twenty needs attention within the first five years.
For lithium disilicate (E.max) specifically, a systematic review by Pieger, Salman and Bidra in The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry found five-year survival of roughly 95 to 98 per cent for single crowns, with the majority of failures occurring in molars under heavy load. These figures match what we observe clinically at our clinic in Antalya: material failure is actually uncommon, and most crowns that need replacing fail for biological reasons — decay, gum disease or a fracture of the tooth beneath.

Different materials age differently. The table below summarises typical service ranges reported in the literature and seen in clinical practice. Individual results vary, so treat these as realistic expectations rather than promises.

What Really Determines Crown Longevity
The material is only one part of the story. In my clinical experience, five factors decide whether a crown reaches its fifteenth birthday.
- Marginal fit. The junction where the crown meets the tooth must be smooth and sealed. A poorly fitting margin traps plaque and invites decay — the single most common reason crowns fail.
- The health of the underlying tooth. A crown on a heavily filled or root-treated tooth carries more biological risk than one on a largely intact tooth. If a tooth needs root canal treatment, completing it properly before crowning is essential.
- Bite forces and grinding. Patients who clench or grind at night place several times the normal load on their crowns. A night guard dramatically extends crown life in these cases.
- Oral hygiene. Crowns cannot decay, but the tooth at the margin can. Daily flossing around crowned teeth matters more, not less.
- Laboratory quality. Digital scanning, precision milling and an experienced technician produce margins measured in microns. This is where clinic standards genuinely differ.
Warning Signs Your Crown May Need Replacing
Crowns rarely fail overnight. They give warnings, and catching them early usually means a simpler, cheaper fix. Contact a dentist promptly if you notice any of the following:
- A dark line or shadow at the gum margin, which can indicate leakage or exposed metal
- New sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods around a crowned tooth
- A rough edge, chip or visible crack in the porcelain
- The crown feeling loose, rocking or clicking when you chew
- Bleeding or persistent inflammation of the gum around the crown
- Food repeatedly packing between the crown and its neighbour
A loose crown is not always a failed crown. In some cases the cement has simply washed out and the crown can be cleaned and re-cemented, provided the tooth underneath remains sound. This is why prompt assessment matters — waiting often turns a re-cementation into a full replacement.
A Realistic Replacement Timeline
Rather than a fixed expiry date, think of your crown in phases. Years one to five are the settling period, where research suggests survival above 94 per cent; any problems here usually relate to fit or bite and are typically adjustable. Years five to ten are the maintenance phase, where regular check-ups and radiographs every couple of years let your dentist monitor the margins. From year ten onwards, your dentist will assess the crown at every visit: if the margin is sealed, the gum healthy and the bite stable, there is no reason to replace a functioning crown simply because of its age. Replacement is indicated when decay reaches the margin, the crown fractures, the fit deteriorates or the aesthetics no longer satisfy you.

How to Make Your Crown Last Longer
- Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth every day, paying particular attention to crown margins.
- Attend a professional check-up and hygiene visit at least once a year so early leakage or gum problems are caught while they are still reversible.
- Wear a night guard if you grind or clench — ask us to assess your bite if you wake with jaw tension.
- Avoid using crowned teeth to open packaging, bite fingernails or chew ice.
- Treat gum disease promptly, since receding, inflamed gums expose crown margins to decay.
Follow these habits and, in most cases, a quality crown will comfortably outlast the averages quoted in the studies. Individual anatomy, bite and health all play a role, so ask your dentist for a personalised assessment rather than relying on averages alone.
