Veneers vs Crowns

A veneer improves how a healthy tooth looks; a crown rebuilds and protects a damaged one. Here is how to know which you actually need — with Taki Dent's real prices.

Veneers and crowns are often confused, but they solve different problems. A veneer is a thin, front-facing shell for cosmetic improvement with minimal tooth preparation. A crown is a full cap that covers the whole tooth to restore its strength when it is broken, heavily filled or root-treated. Choosing correctly protects your tooth for the long term.

  • Veneers from €180–€350/tooth — zirconia crown €215/tooth
  • Veneer = cosmetic, minimal prep, front surface only
  • Crown = structural, full coverage, for damaged teeth

Do I need a veneer or a crown?

Quick answer: At Taki Dent in Antalya, you need a veneer if your tooth is healthy and you simply want to improve its colour, shape or minor chips — veneers cost from €180 per tooth (composite) or from €350 (porcelain/E.max). You need a crown if the tooth is broken, heavily filled, root-treated or badly worn, because a crown caps and strengthens the whole tooth — a zirconia crown is €215 per tooth. Veneers are cosmetic; crowns are structural.

What is a veneer, and what is a crown?

A veneer is a thin shell — porcelain, E.max or composite resin — bonded to the front-facing surface of a tooth. It changes the colour, shape, length and alignment of a tooth without covering the back or biting surfaces. Because it only faces the front, very little of the natural tooth is removed, making veneers a conservative, largely cosmetic treatment for healthy teeth.

A crown is a full cap that encases the entire tooth, right down to the gum line. It restores a tooth's strength, shape and function as well as its appearance. Crowns are used when so much natural tooth has been lost — through decay, a large filling, a crack, wear or root-canal treatment — that a simple shell would not survive the forces of biting and chewing.

In short: a veneer makes a healthy tooth look better, while a crown rebuilds and protects a compromised tooth.

How much tooth is prepared, and how long do they last?

Tooth preparation. A veneer needs only a light reduction of the front enamel — typically 0.3–0.5 mm — and composite veneers may need little or none. A crown requires reshaping the tooth on all surfaces so the cap can fit over it, which means removing more natural tooth structure. If your tooth is healthy, a veneer preserves far more of it.

Longevity. Porcelain and E.max veneers commonly last 10–20 years, with systematic-review data reporting around 95.5% survival at 10 years (J Clin Med, 2021); composite veneers last around 5–7 years. A well-made zirconia crown is extremely durable and also lasts many years, and because it protects the whole tooth it is the safer long-term choice for a weakened tooth.

Strength. This is the key difference: a crown adds structural strength, while a veneer adds almost none. That is why a cracked or root-treated tooth needs a crown, not a veneer, no matter how good the veneer looks.

  • ✓ Healthy teeth with a good amount of enamel

A crown is best for…

  • ✓ Root-canal treated teeth that need protection
  • ✓ Heavily worn or ground-down teeth
  • ✓ Restoring a single dental implant

At Taki Dent, Specialist Prosthodontist Dr Sadık Taki assesses each tooth and recommends the option that protects it best over the long term — never simply the more expensive one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a veneer and a crown?

A veneer is a thin shell bonded only to the front-facing surface of a tooth to improve its appearance, and it needs very little tooth preparation. A crown is a full cap that covers the entire tooth, restoring strength as well as looks. Veneers are a cosmetic solution for healthy teeth with chips, gaps or discolouration; crowns are a structural solution for teeth that are broken, heavily filled, root-treated or badly worn. At Taki Dent, Specialist Prosthodontist Dr Sadık Taki recommends whichever protects your tooth best.

Are veneers or crowns more expensive?

The two are priced similarly at Taki Dent. Veneers start from €180 per tooth for composite and from €350 per tooth for porcelain or E.max, while a zirconia crown is €215 per tooth. The right choice is driven by what the tooth needs rather than price alone: a healthy tooth needing only a cosmetic improvement suits a veneer, while a damaged or weakened tooth needs the full coverage and strength of a crown.

Do veneers or crowns require more tooth removal?

Crowns require more tooth removal. Because a crown caps the whole tooth, more of the natural tooth structure is reshaped on all surfaces. A veneer covers only the front, so a much smaller amount of enamel is removed — typically 0.3–0.5 mm — and composite veneers may need little or none. If preserving natural tooth is a priority and the tooth is healthy, a veneer is the more conservative option.

Can I get a veneer instead of a crown?

Only if the tooth is essentially healthy and structurally sound. Veneers improve appearance but add little strength, so they are not suitable for teeth that are cracked, heavily filled, root-canal treated or badly worn — those need a crown to prevent further damage. If your tooth is healthy and you simply want to correct its colour, shape or minor chips, a veneer is usually the better, more conservative choice. Dr Sadık Taki will assess your tooth and advise honestly.
