Same-Day Dental Implants: How They Work
Dental Expert
TABLE OF CONTENTS
Same-day dental implants promise something that sounds almost too good: walk in with missing or failing teeth in the morning, walk out with fixed teeth the same day. The technique is real, well documented and used successfully in clinics worldwide — but it is often described inaccurately in marketing. As a prosthodontist, I want to explain precisely what happens on the day, who is genuinely suitable, and where the phrase "same day" needs an honest asterisk.
What Same-Day Dental Implants Actually Mean
In conventional two-stage implant treatment, the titanium implant is placed in the jaw and left to fuse with the bone — a process called osseointegration — for three to six months before the final tooth is attached. Same-day treatment, known clinically as immediate loading, changes the sequence: the implant is placed and a fixed provisional (temporary) tooth or bridge is attached within 24 hours, so you never leave the clinic without teeth.
The crucial detail most adverts omit: the tooth fitted on the day is a high-quality provisional, engineered to look natural and function carefully while the bone heals underneath. The definitive porcelain or zirconium restoration is fitted a few months later, once integration is confirmed. So "same-day teeth" is accurate; "same-day final teeth" is not, and any clinic claiming otherwise for a standard case deserves scepticism.
How the Procedure Works, Step by Step
- Digital planning. A 3D CT scan maps your bone volume, nerve positions and sinus anatomy. Implant positions are planned on screen before anything touches your mouth.
- Extractions where needed. Failing teeth are removed gently at the same appointment — immediate placement into fresh extraction sites is common and well studied.
- Implant placement. The implants are inserted, often using surgical guides for precision. The surgeon measures the primary stability of each implant — essentially how firmly it grips the bone.
- The stability decision. This is the honest fork in the road. If stability values are high enough, a provisional restoration is attached the same day. If not, the implants are left to heal conventionally — a good surgeon will never load an unstable implant to keep a marketing promise.
- Provisional teeth fitted. A lab-made temporary bridge or crown is secured to the implants within hours.
- Final restoration. After roughly three to six months, you return for the definitive teeth, precisely matched in shade and shape.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Immediate loading depends on the quality and quantity of your bone and on your overall health. Typically favourable factors include:
- Adequate bone volume and density, confirmed on CT scan
- Good general health, with conditions such as diabetes well controlled
- Non-smoker, or willing to stop around surgery — smoking measurably raises failure risk
- No untreated gum disease
- No heavy uncontrolled tooth grinding (bruxism), or willingness to wear a night guard
Full-arch cases are, perhaps surprisingly, often the best candidates: techniques such as All-on-4 and All-on-6 were designed around immediate loading, because splinting four to six implants together under one rigid bridge distributes forces safely while the bone heals. Single back teeth, by contrast, take heavy chewing loads alone and are more often treated conventionally. Suitability is always a clinical judgement made after imaging — not something a clinic can promise over WhatsApp.
Same-Day vs Conventional Implants: A Comparison
| Factor | Same-day (immediate loading) | Conventional (two-stage) |
|---|---|---|
| Time without teeth | None — fixed provisional within 24 hours | Healing period with denture or gap (3–6 months) |
| Surgical visits | Usually one placement visit + one fitting visit | Two stages, sometimes three with grafting |
| Suitability | Requires good bone and high primary stability | Suitable for almost all implant patients |
| Success rates | Studies report comparable results in well-selected cases | Long-established benchmark, typically 95%+ over 10 years |
| Diet during healing | Soft-food diet for 8–12 weeks is essential | Fewer restrictions once healed |
The research picture is reassuring: in carefully selected patients, immediate loading achieves survival rates comparable to conventional protocols. The phrase to underline is carefully selected — case selection, not the technique itself, is what separates success from failure.
What About Cost and Travel Logistics?
Same-day protocols suit international patients particularly well because they compress the surgical phase into a single stay. A typical journey with us in Antalya looks like this: a 5–7 day first visit for scans, surgery and provisional teeth, then a second visit of about a week, three to six months later, for the final bridge. In Turkey, a single implant typically starts from around £400–£600 and a full-arch All-on-4 from approximately £4,000–£6,000 per arch — compared with £10,000–£14,000 in the UK. Prices vary with materials and case complexity, so check our current price list and read our comparison of implant costs in Turkey for details.
Recovery: What the First Weeks Look Like
- Days 1–3: Mild swelling and discomfort, managed with standard painkillers. Most patients are surprised how manageable it is.
- Weeks 1–2: Stitches settle or are removed; you eat soft, cool foods and keep the surgical sites clean as instructed.
- Weeks 2–12: Strictly soft diet. This is the single most important thing you control — overloading provisional teeth during early healing is a leading cause of preventable failure.
- Months 3–6: Integration is checked, and the final restoration is designed and fitted.
We support international patients remotely throughout healing with photo and video check-ins, and every implant we place is covered by a written guarantee.
The Bottom Line
Same-day dental implants are a genuine, evidence-backed option — not a gimmick — but they are a clinical protocol with entry criteria, not a universal upgrade. The right question is not "do you offer same-day implants?" but "am I a suitable candidate, and what will you do if my bone says no on the day?" A clinic that answers the second question honestly is a clinic you can trust with the first. Send us your X-rays or visit our dental implants in Antalya page to see how we assess each case.
