TABLE OF CONTENTS
What you eat after dental treatment significantly affects both your recovery speed and the long-term success of your results. Whether you have had implants, veneers, crowns, or a combination, following the right dietary guidelines in the days and weeks after treatment makes a real difference. Here is the complete guide.
First 24 Hours: Cool and Soft Only
In the first 24 hours after any dental procedure involving surgery or tooth preparation, stick strictly to:
- Cold or room-temperature foods only — hot foods and drinks increase blood flow to the area and can cause or worsen bleeding
- Ice cream, yogurt, cold soup, cold milk, smoothies (no seeds or bits)
- Mashed potato (cooled to room temperature)
- Cold water — stay hydrated
- Avoid: hot drinks (tea, coffee, soup), carbonated drinks, alcohol, anything requiring chewing
After veneers or crowns without surgical procedure, hot/cold restrictions are less strict, but soft foods are still advisable for the first 24 hours while cement sets or bonding cures fully.
Days 2–7: The Soft Food Phase
From day 2 through the end of the first week, expand your diet gradually to include soft, nutrient-rich foods that support healing:
Good Foods to Eat:
- Protein: Scrambled eggs, poached eggs, soft fish (salmon, cod), soft chicken, Greek yogurt, hummus
- Carbohydrates: Mashed potato, soft pasta, well-cooked rice, porridge/oatmeal, soft bread (no crust)
- Vegetables: Well-cooked (steamed or boiled) soft vegetables — sweet potato, courgette, butternut squash, peas
- Fruit: Banana, avocado, soft melon, tinned fruit in juice, smoothies
- Dairy: Soft cheese, cottage cheese, milkshakes, ice cream
Foods to Avoid This Week:
- Hard bread or toast (crust), crackers, raw carrots, apples
- Nuts, seeds, popcorn
- Chewy foods: steak, chewy bread, toffee, chewing gum
- Spicy foods (can irritate healing tissue)
- Alcohol (dehydrating and may interact with antibiotics)
Week 2 Onwards: Gradual Return to Normal
By the second week, most patients can return to a near-normal diet. However, some foods should still be avoided around implant sites specifically:
- Continue to avoid biting hard foods directly on implant sites for the first month
- Avoid ice chewing — this is one of the most common causes of veneer and crown fracture
- Avoid biting with front teeth into hard foods (crusty baguettes, hard pizza crust, raw carrots) even after healing
Long-Term Diet Considerations
For Implant Patients:
Once fully healed (3–6 months), dental implants function like natural teeth and you can eat virtually anything. Long-term, avoid habitually biting ice, hard sweets, or hard objects with implant teeth — while titanium and ceramic are very strong, repeated impact forces can damage the crown.
For Veneer Patients:
Porcelain veneers are highly durable but can chip if subjected to unusual impact. Avoid: biting fingernails, pen lids, thread, or very hard foods with veneer teeth. With normal dietary habits, E.max veneers last 10–20 years. More detail is available on our veneers Turkey page.
For Crown Patients:
Zirconia and E.max crowns are extremely durable. Normal diet is fine long-term. The main risk is sticky foods pulling a crown off if the cement seal is imperfect — report any looseness immediately.
Antalya Restaurant Tips for Dental Patients
If you are in Antalya recovering between treatment sessions, Turkish cuisine actually has excellent soft food options:
- Mercimek corbasi (red lentil soup) — warm and nutritious, cool slightly before eating
- Cacik (yogurt with cucumber) — soft and cooling
- Menemen (soft scrambled eggs with tomato) — ideal post-treatment meal
- Muhallebi (milk pudding) — a traditional Turkish dessert, perfect for dental recovery
- Tavuk corbasi (chicken soup) — warm and healing, cooled to room temperature
Most Antalya restaurants near TakiDent's clinic area are experienced with international visitors and can accommodate dietary requests. Your patient coordinator can recommend nearby options suitable for your recovery stage.
Hydration
Water is the best drink throughout recovery. Aim for at least 2 litres per day. Good hydration supports blood circulation to healing tissue and reduces the risk of dry socket after implant surgery. Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, both of which are dehydrating.
