Dental Scams in Turkey: How to Avoid Them

Turkey's dental tourism industry is overwhelmingly legitimate and professional, serving hundreds of thousands of international patients each year with excellent outcomes. However, like any large industry, it is not without a minority of bad actors who take advantage of patients seeking affordable care. This article describes the most common dental scams in Turkey, gives you specific red flags to watch for, and explains exactly how to verify that the clinic you choose is trustworthy and ethical.

Common Dental Scams to Be Aware Of

1. Bait-and-Switch Pricing

The most common complaint from dental tourists involves being quoted one price online or by phone, then being presented with a significantly higher price once they have arrived in Turkey — often after some treatment has already begun, making it psychologically and practically difficult to walk away. Some clinics use deliberately vague initial quotes that exclude "extras" which turn out to be mandatory components of the treatment.

How to avoid it: Always insist on a comprehensive, itemised written treatment plan and cost quote before you book your flights. The quote should specify every procedure, the implant or material brand, anaesthesia, scans, and follow-up appointments. If a clinic refuses to provide this, walk away.

2. Unnecessary Treatments

Some clinics recommend far more treatment than is clinically necessary — replacing healthy teeth unnecessarily, recommending implants where other solutions would suffice, or suggesting crowns for teeth that only need fillings. This is designed to maximise revenue from patients who may not get a second opinion before agreeing.

How to avoid it: Always share your dental records and X-rays with the clinic before travelling for a remote second opinion. Consider getting a second assessment from your home dentist. Be wary of any clinic that cannot clearly explain why each recommended treatment is necessary.

3. Counterfeit or Inferior Implants

Some budget clinics use unbranded generic implants while claiming to use premium brands, or use implants of genuinely inferior quality. Generic implants may have higher failure rates and are not interchangeable with named brand components if future work is needed.

How to avoid it: Ask the clinic to specify the exact implant brand, model, and batch number before treatment. A reputable clinic will provide this proactively. After treatment, insist on receiving the implant passport (a standard document confirming implant details). TakiDent provides implant passports as standard for all implant patients.

4. Fake Accreditations and Awards

Some clinics display logos of "accreditations" from organisations that do not exist or awards from pay-to-win directories. The dental tourism marketing space includes a number of questionable certification bodies.

How to avoid it: Verify accreditations independently. The Turkish Ministry of Health licence can be checked on the government portal. JCI accreditation can be verified on the JCI website. Be sceptical of any "award" that you cannot independently verify through the awarding organisation's own website.

5. Courier-Scheme Travel Agents

Some dental tourism "agencies" act as intermediaries, booking patients into clinics that pay them high referral commissions — regardless of clinical quality. These agencies have a financial incentive to recommend clinics that pay the most, not clinics that deliver the best patient outcomes.

How to avoid it: Book directly with clinics that have substantial independent reputations. TakiDent works directly with international patients — no intermediaries, no referral fees, just transparent direct relationships.

Red Flags: What to Watch For

  • No Ministry of Health licence number provided on request
  • No written treatment plan or cost quote before travel
  • Vague descriptions of implant brands ("European quality" without naming the brand)
  • Pressure to pay in full before treatment begins
  • Very few or suspiciously uniform reviews on Google
  • No English-speaking clinical staff (only administrative staff)
  • Clinic that cannot name the dentist who will perform your treatment
  • No written treatment guarantee

How to Verify a Clinic Is Trustworthy

Use this verification checklist before booking any dental clinic in Turkey:

  • Search the clinic name on Google Maps and read recent, independent reviews
  • Check the clinic on Trustpilot or similar independent platforms
  • Ask for Ministry of Health licence number and verify on the Turkish MoH website
  • Request a written itemised treatment plan before committing
  • Ask for the name and credentials of the dentist who will treat you
  • Ask what implant brand and model will be used
  • Ask about the written guarantee and what it covers
