TABLE OF CONTENTS
A dental trip to Turkey is well-organised and smooth with the right preparation. Beyond the clinical planning, there are practical travel considerations that make a real difference to your experience — from what to pack to how to handle the return journey after treatment. Here is TakiDent's complete travel tips guide for dental patients.
Pre-Travel Checklist
In the 2–4 weeks before your trip, make sure you have:
- Travel documents: Valid passport (6+ months validity), e-Visa if required for your nationality (see our dental trip planning guide), travel insurance documents
- Dental records: Recent X-rays, treatment records from your home dentist, any allergy or medical history relevant to dental treatment
- Medications: A supply of any regular medications for the full trip duration plus 3 extra days, in original packaging with prescription if controlled
- Treatment confirmation: TakiDent treatment plan, clinic address, patient coordinator's WhatsApp number, hotel booking confirmation
- Currency: Inform your bank you are travelling to Turkey; load a Wise or Revolut card with funds; carry €50–€100 equivalent in Turkish Lira for cash transactions
- Travel insurance: Confirm it covers planned dental treatment complications and emergency medical care in Turkey
What to Pack
Clothing and Comfort:
- Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing — particularly on treatment days (no tight collars or high necklines)
- Layers for the clinic (air conditioning can be cool) and warm weather outside
- Comfortable flat shoes — particularly important if you will be walking on uneven cobbled streets in Kaleiçi
- Sunscreen and sunglasses — Antalya is sunny even in spring and autumn
Health and Medical:
- Over-the-counter ibuprofen (TakiDent will provide prescription pain relief, but having your own familiar brand is reassuring)
- Soft travel pillow — very useful if your flight is early morning or late evening, and for sleeping with head elevated post-implant surgery
- Ice pack (reusable, collapsible) — for post-surgery swelling management if not provided by hotel
- Soft foods for the first night: small tub of yogurt, a banana, soft cheese — in case you arrive after shops close
Technology:
- Downloaded Google Translate app with Turkish language pack (for offline use)
- Your clinic and hotel addresses saved in Google Maps
- TakiDent coordinator's WhatsApp contact saved and tested before arrival
- Phone charger and a universal travel adapter (Turkey uses Type F sockets, same as Europe)
During Travel: On the Flight
- Stay hydrated: Drink water regularly throughout the flight. Cabin air is very dry — dehydration before a dental procedure is not ideal.
- Avoid alcohol before implant procedures: Alcohol dehydrates and can increase bleeding risk; avoid in the 24 hours before surgical treatment.
- Compression socks on long flights: Reduces deep vein thrombosis risk, particularly important if you have had or are about to have any surgical procedure.
- Eat properly: Have a good meal before your flight if your treatment is scheduled for arrival day — you may be restricted to soft foods afterwards.
In Antalya: Practical Tips
- SIM card: Purchase a local Turkish SIM at the airport for affordable data and calls. Turkcell and Vodafone Turkey have airport kiosks. This prevents bill shock on roaming charges and ensures reliable WhatsApp communication with the clinic.
- Taxis: Always use the official metered yellow taxis. The Antalya BiTaksi or inDrive apps also work well for pre-booking.
- Currency: ATMs in Antalya are abundant and reliable. Withdraw Turkish Lira for smaller purchases.
- Pharmacy (Eczane): Turkish pharmacies are excellent and many pharmacists speak basic English. They can provide over-the-counter pain relief and many antibiotics without prescription — though always follow TakiDent's prescribed protocol.
- Emergency number: Turkey's emergency services number is 112 (police, fire, ambulance).
Post-Treatment Return Journey Tips
- Implant patients: Wait the recommended 24–48+ hours before flying. Do not rush your departure — the small extra hotel cost is trivial compared to the investment in your implants.
- Veneer patients: Most can travel the day after final fitting, though waiting 24 hours is advisable to ensure any bite sensitivity has settled.
- Medications on the flight: Take any remaining prescribed pain relief in your carry-on, not checked luggage. Bring the prescription in case of customs queries.
- Soft food on the flight: Order a soft meal option if available, or carry soft snacks. Avoid hard nuts, hard bread, or anything requiring heavy chewing.
- Written aftercare instructions: Keep these accessible — your home dentist may ask to review them.
After You Arrive Home
Contact TakiDent on WhatsApp within 24 hours of arriving home to confirm your safe return and report how the treatment site feels. This is part of TakiDent's standard aftercare programme. Your patient coordinator will schedule follow-up calls at 1 week and 1 month.
