Prosthodontics Explained: What It Is and Why You Need It

"Prosthodontics" is a word many patients meet for the first time when researching implants or a smile makeover. Here is what it means, and why a prosthodontist-led clinic can matter for complex dental work.

What prosthodontics is

Prosthodontics is the dental specialty concerned with restoring and replacing teeth — crowns, bridges, veneers, dentures and the restorative side of dental implants. A prosthodontist is a dentist who has completed several years of additional, recognised specialist training in this field after dental school.

Prosthodontist vs general dentist

A general dentist provides a broad range of everyday care. A prosthodontist focuses on rebuilding function and aesthetics, particularly in complex or extensive cases — for example full-mouth restoration, multiple missing teeth, worn dentitions, or demanding cosmetic work. The two often work together, with the specialist leading the more complex restorative planning.

What a prosthodontist does

  • Designs and fits crowns, bridges and veneers
  • Plans and restores dental implants (the crown and prosthetic side)
  • Creates dentures, including implant-supported options
  • Plans smile makeovers and full-mouth rehabilitation
  • Manages bite (occlusion) and worn or broken-down teeth

Why it matters for implants and smile design

The long-term result of an implant or smile makeover depends heavily on planning and the final restoration, not just the surgery. A prosthodontist plans the end result first — how the teeth should look and function — and works back from there, which is especially valuable in complex cases.
