Dental Implants vs. Dentures vs. Crowns: Complete Comparison

TABLE OF CONTENTS
Implants, dentures and crowns solve different problems, and the right choice depends on your situation. This guide compares them clearly so you can understand your options before treatment.
First, the key difference
A crown restores a single damaged tooth that still has a root. A dental implant replaces a missing tooth, root and all. A denture is a removable replacement for several or all missing teeth. So they are not really rivals — they answer different questions.
Dental crowns
Best when a natural tooth is cracked, heavily filled or root-treated but still present. A crown protects and rebuilds it, preserving the natural root. Made from zirconia or IPS e.max, crowns are durable and natural-looking, with a 5–10 year written guarantee depending on material.
Dental implants
Best for replacing missing teeth with a fixed, standalone solution that does not rely on neighbouring teeth. Implants are the most stable long-term option, with around 90–95% survival at 10 years (Howe et al., 2019). They require enough bone and a healing period, and are a larger up-front investment. For a full arch, All-on-4 or All-on-6 gives a fixed bridge on several implants.
Dentures
Best when many or all teeth are missing and a removable, lower-cost option is preferred, or as a stepping stone. Modern dentures can look good, but they are removable, may be less stable when chewing, and do not prevent the bone loss that follows tooth loss. An implant-supported (or implant-retained) denture combines the two — greater stability with a removable option.
A simple way to choose
- One damaged tooth, root intact: crown
- One or a few missing teeth: implant(s)
- Most or all teeth missing, fixed solution wanted: All-on-4 / All-on-6
- Most or all teeth missing, removable or lower-cost: denture (optionally implant-retained)
Our approach
We always favour keeping a natural tooth where it can realistically be saved, and we recommend the most conservative option that meets your needs. Your case is assessed with a 3D CBCT scan and set out in a written plan by specialist prosthodontist Dr Sadık Taki (Ministry of Health specialty registration 61875).
