Healing Time After Dental Implants: What to Expect

Understanding the healing timeline after dental implants is essential for planning your treatment, especially if you are travelling from abroad. The good news: the initial recovery is faster and more comfortable than most patients expect, and the osseointegration phase (the months of bone fusion) is entirely painless. Here is the complete healing timeline.

Immediate Post-Op: First 24–48 Hours

In the first 24 hours after implant surgery, your priority is rest. The surgical site will be numb for 2–4 hours post-procedure; as the anaesthesia wears off, mild to moderate soreness begins. This is expected and manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication (ibuprofen 400–600mg every 6 hours).

What to expect in the first 48 hours:

  • Swelling of the gum and potentially the jaw or cheek, peaking at around 48 hours
  • Light bleeding or pink-tinged saliva — normal for up to 24 hours
  • Mild bruising around the jaw area
  • Soreness when opening the mouth wide

What to do:

  • Apply a cold pack to the outside of the jaw for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off for the first 12 hours
  • Eat only soft, cool foods (yogurt, cold soup, ice cream, mashed potato)
  • Do not rinse vigorously or spit — allow blood clot to form
  • Sleep with head slightly elevated on an extra pillow
  • Avoid smoking, alcohol, and strenuous exercise

First Week: Soft Diet and Gentle Recovery

By days 3–5, swelling begins to reduce noticeably and pain diminishes significantly. Most patients find over-the-counter pain relief is no longer needed by day 5. You can begin to eat a broader range of soft foods — scrambled eggs, pasta, fish, soft bread — but should continue to avoid hard, crunchy, or very hot foods around the implant site.

Light activity can resume after 48 hours. Avoid heavy exercise, gym sessions, or any activity that significantly raises blood pressure for the first week, as this can increase bleeding risk.

Weeks 2–4: Returning to Normal Activities

By the end of the second week, the surgical wound is largely healed externally. Any dissolvable sutures will have dissolved or been removed. You can resume most normal activities and eat a near-normal diet, avoiding very hard foods such as nuts, crusty baguettes, or hard candy directly on the implant site.

A follow-up X-ray may be taken at the 2-week mark to confirm early integration. TakiDent international patients can have this done at a local dental practice at home and share the image via WhatsApp for remote review.

The Osseointegration Phase: 3–6 Months

This is the most misunderstood phase of implant healing. Osseointegration — the biological bonding of bone to the titanium implant surface — takes 3–6 months to complete. Crucially, this process is completely painless. There are no symptoms, no restrictions on normal life, and no treatment required during this period. You return home and live completely normally.

The timeline varies by location:

  • Lower jaw (mandible): typically 3–4 months (denser bone integrates faster)
  • Upper jaw (maxilla): typically 5–6 months (less dense bone, slower integration)
  • Bone-grafted sites: up to 6 months

Placement of Final Crown

Once osseointegration is confirmed (via X-ray), you return to TakiDent for the final crown placement — a completely pain-free visit that takes about 60–90 minutes. The abutment is attached to the implant, impressions or digital scans are taken, and your permanent ceramic crown is fitted and adjusted for perfect bite alignment.

This is the moment your implant becomes a fully functional, natural-feeling permanent tooth. Learn more on the dental implants Turkey page, or see All-on-4 Turkey for full-arch restoration healing timelines.

TakiDent Remote Monitoring Between Visits

For international patients, TakiDent provides a structured remote monitoring programme during the osseointegration phase. At 6 weeks, 3 months, and 5 months, patients are asked to share an X-ray from their local dentist along with clinical photos. TakiDent reviews these and confirms readiness for the crown appointment — so your return visit is always planned with certainty.

Flying After Implants

Most patients can fly home safely within 24–72 hours of implant surgery. Flying is generally not problematic for dental implants — the procedure is not like a sinus operation where pressure changes are a major concern. See our dedicated flying after dental implants guide for full advice on travel after surgery.
